Dragon Boat Festival Culture

The Chinese Dragon Boat Festival 2017 falls on May 30 (Tuesday). PBM will celebrate the festival from May 28(Sunday) to May 30(Tuesday) and be back to work on May 31(Wednesday).

The Dragon Boat Festival, also called Duanwu Festival, Double Fifth Festival, is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth moon of the lunar calendar and to commemorate Qu Yuan (340-278 BC), an ancient Chinese patriotic poet.

Chinese Culture of Dragon Boat Festival

As one of the main activities, dragon boat race has varying level of popularity in China. The dragon boat race custom started in southern China, where the fifth lunar day of the fifth lunar month was selected as a totem ceremony. The dragon was the main symbol on the totem, because the Chinese believe that they are sons of the dragon. Later the Chinese connected this ceremony with the Duanwu Festival. Dragon Boat Race events are popular in Hong Kong and Taiwan.

International Culture of Dragon Boat Festival

Dragon boat racing has become an international event. The sport is popular in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Australia, Singapore, and other countries. Some of the events are held during July, August, or September, and not held during the Dragon Boat Festival.

The U.S Navy Dragon Boat Team paddled in large 32-person boats for the “opening” annual race that occurred on May 5 on the island of Okinawa, Japan.

The 38th Annual Boston Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival will be held the weekend of June 10-11, 2017.

The California Dragon Boat Association presents the 22nd Annual Northern California International Dragon Boat Festival at Lake Merritt, Oakland! Cheer on the fleet of colorful 40-foot dragon boats as they race to the beat of Chinese drums on Saturday & Sunday, September 23 & 24, 2017.

With the advancement of globalization, dragon boat race will spread to more other countries as cultural carrier, and foreign friends will share the fun of Chinese Culture.
